THE MOʻOLELO BEHIND THE DESIGN
This design is inspired by Toni-Jane Nālani Ventura, a beautiful soul who touched the world in profound ways during her short but meaningful time here. The pulelehua, also known as the Kamehameha butterfly (Vanessa tameamea), represents her spirit—free, delicate, and resilient. In our culture, winged creatures like the pulelehua are seen as messengers from the heavens, reminding us of the enduring love and guidance of those who have gone before us. Paired with the māmaki (Pipturus albidus), a plant known for its healing properties and intrinsically tied to the pulelehua as the main host plant for its larvae, the design reflects the comfort and strength that surrounded Toni’s ‘ohana during their journey.
The name, “Pulelehua o nā Lani Kau i ka Lau Māmaki,” meaning “the endemic Hawaiian butterfly that perches on the māmaki leaf” first reflects the intimate relationship between the butterfly and the plant. It embodies Toni-Jane’s presence as a gift from above and honors the love, strength, and hope her family found through her life. Though her time here was brief, her impact was immeasurable, reminding us of the preciousness of life and the beauty in transformation.
NO KA PONO O KA ʻĀINA: giving back through designs
To honor Toni’s legacy, a portion of the proceeds from this design will be donated to the Kapi’olani NICU, a place that provided her with exceptional care and compassion. This contribution helps ensure other families facing similar challenges receive the same support and love.
Through this design, we share a message of resilience, healing, and aloha. Toni will always be remembered as a light, a fighter, and a reminder of the unbreakable bond between earth and heaven.
